Some reflections and lessons painfully learnt in the interregnum

Dear readers,
due to a personal tragedy and its aftermath there has been an unexpectedly long interruption in services here.

Past few months have often found my mind involuntarily meandering on such deadends as the meaning and purpose of death, on the widely held belief in some sort of life after it, on the purpose of life or lack therof and other such futilities.

Why are we born and to what end we die? While both life and death may be entirely puposeless, yet it is human to pine for a reason of existence of self other than being a chance occurrence.

It is human to reflect on being human. And it is human to struggle with scanty and pitiful answers one comes up with. The feebler minds are not able to cope with this struggle and turn to the sedative("opium" according to Marx) of religion with its ready made and seductive myths. Those who know better (or rather, know that we don't know much better- agnostics or atheists like myself) are tormented by questions that seemingly cannot ever be resolved. Not by philisophers or saints or prophets or even by modern scientists with their giant particle-colliders and Theory of Everything.

Gustave Doré - Death Depicted as the Grim Reaper on Top of the World from an edition of Poe's The Raven

We know that we don't know- but, heck, it is so hard to let it go at that! Therein lies the torment. While we may fashion a purpose conciously(to write a novel, become a millionaire, become the preident) or by default(to raise a family, make a career, somehow pass through life without trouble), there is that almost subconcious and constant vexation, like the background radiation of soul - is there something more? Are we born to some cosmic purpose, to some greater calling that we, in our helpless inadequacy, are unble to grasp and fulfill? We live and sure, we will die -but is that all?

If there was God and if one could face Him -one would ask:
"Anything else, my Lord?"

It may be, of course, meaningless to seek a meaning - my mind accepts this despite its resistance; yet it also feels almost a pity on the thought of it being so.

Is it all futile?
Gustave Doré
- Hoarders and Wasters
Dante Alighieri's  Inferno
Plate 22

To veer off, among my other forced ponderings was to question the many common assumptions and presumptions-
No, death and taxes are not inevitable!

I am optimist that science shall one day make us immortal. The thought will horrify the huamnity-hating environmentalists, no doubt. But these pestilential specimens will be long dead by the time immortality arrives- otherwise imagine the horror of an undying Al Gore or the never ending scourge of an immortal Rajendra Pachauri! And no there shall be no shortage of space -imagine all the millions and billions of planets waiting for us.

Living forever may be hundreds or thousands of years away - but life without taxes is possible right now. It is a tragedy of humankind not to be able to live with each other without forced servitude(which is what taxes are). But I shall write much more on this later.

There were also some painful lessons I learnt in recent months. Painful and surprising despite my natural cynicism and despite the fact that I anticipated most of what happened. One lesson is that your close ones in their greed of pelf and property will stab you in the back with nary a thought. Brother will deceive brother and sister will twist the knife. Another lesson is that the one doing the stabbing will loudly proclaim himself the victim. Such are the ways of the world.

I might blog on this later.

So dear readers, I am glad to be back and will continue to blog, all my troubles and travails permitting. And a warm thank you to those who wrote in to ask after me. Your mail comforted me in some dark times. Thanks.

The drudgery of importing Haloscan comments into Disqus

Ok, I have tried everything but this brain surgery equivalent suggested here to import the old Haloscan comments into the new Disqus system. And all I can say is, as the French would put it-
J'en ai marre!
and
Je m'en fous!

The only way out now is the long way round - to manually paste in the old comments into the new system. Which is what I'm, alas, have to do.

To identify the these comments, there will be a footnote for each comment pointing out the original comment date and a link to this post. E.g.-

Why don't those jholawalas get together and go to some socialist hellhole country, if they love them so much. First to go should be Arundhati roy

Original comment date- 2009-10-29. See -http://libertynewscentral.blogspot.com/2012/01/drudgery-of-importing-haloscan-comments.html

Let the drudgery begin!

Whew, done! Anybody notice anything missing, you tell me, OK?

All solutions to Typominima headaches

Ok, not all. Not even most. But a lot, I hope, of that some which is really troublesome about this gorgeous but exasperating template. For this last emotion see the comments here or here where I am involved.

Typominima is a single wide column template created by Blogsessive for Wordpress (sometimes it seems all good designs are created for Wordpress) and adapted to Blogger by Vikas Bhargava (I think) of Besttheme.net.

It has minimum of graphic elements to distract(hence the name Typo -minima). However that also creates problems for those who love this design but are rankled by the lack of options. You love it, you hate it! It feels like your spouse!

The elements missing in the original template include the post date, author stamp, link to comments, labels, quick edit icons, share links etc (that is, all the goodies in a post footer). There is also a loneliness at the top,  at least for me. I love big, colorful and striking blog header images. And I just can't live without sidebars. Where else to put ads, shameless self-promotions and other thingamijigs?

After great inhuman exertions ( so great that if someone of finer intellect had put them to task in a higher field, he might have come up with the Super Grand Unification Theory of the Universe), I believe I have managed to solve some of the most entangling tangles of this lovely template.
(Ok, I'm kidding - about the effort, I mean. But it was exasperating at times).

Did I say I'll be back?

My apologies for an unexpectedly long break. It was the combination of a holiday (loved it), indisposition (very fatiguing - felt all squeezed out like toothpaste run over by a truck) and above all a frustrating blogger's block (yes, there is such a thing) the size of Milky Way.

Anyway, the things will be settling down to normal soon or so I hope. Whatever normal was.

In the immortal words of Jim Carrey (Real audio file)-

"Did you miss me?"

No, no, don't tell!

Getting around the Blogger template upload problem

Ah, the geniuses of Blogger have been doing naughty things - so naughty that they have messed up the back end of the Blogger platform, leaving thousands of poor blooging souls like myself to go crazy in our pajamas (bloggers are supposed to work in PJs). Have a look.

The problem has been summarized thus -

In the design back end of Blogger, you can not use the following features.

1. Expand Widget Template.
2. Preview your Template Savings.
3. Clear Your HTML Template Savings.
4. Save your Template in HTML Mode.

A couple of possible work arounds till blogger gathers it's marbles back.

Liberty News Central renews

UPDATE - all stuff related to the Typominima template and possible solutions is now posted here-
http://libertynewscentral.blogspot.com/2011/07/all-solutions-to-typominima-headaches.html

As you might have noticed, the new look of Liberty News Central blog is here with a new commenting system . Out you greedy pigs of Haloscan/JSKit(keep asking for 40$ !) and in Disqus!

The blog had become creaky and languid with an overloaded and confusing code with trying loading times. I was shopping around for a new blog design - Ok, kidding, a cheapo like me seeks far for free stuff -when I came to this wordpress design Typominima by Blogsessive touted as "clean and beautiful". And they were right - it is damn right gorgeous. Have a look. Happily it had been adapted for Blogger by the talented Vikas Bhargava. My gratitude to him and the coders at Blogsessive.

However for my own purposes the minimal look -while a killer -was simply too inadequate for this blog. A couple of sidebars for all the gadgets and neon signs were indispensable. So there went a few long, wasted days. This is the only 3 column version of Typominima as far as I know. It was widened from a single column of 770px to a three column width of 960px. The central column was reduced to 616 px to keep to this width. Also the usual Blogger stuff that had been left out like comments, labels, timestamp, author name et al was restored. I expect this to be a happy compromise of beauty and utility.

I am not a coding expert so I expect there will be some/plenty bugs and glitches and especially some innocuous(hopefully!) bit of code that has not yet been cleaned up. So far so good though. If you notice anything do let me know.

So GOODBYE old look -

which I loved.

But I love this one more. Welcome!

A note on the comments -
scores of comments left at this blog are currently not visible as Haloscan has been replaced with Disqus. However don't worry, they are not lost in ether- they shall be brought back into the new system soon enough.

Update -
If you wish to use this template, then download it from here-

Just one condition: do not remove the credits at the very bottom. A lot of effort by multiple persons(who have probably never met!) went into this. Also you will need to replace the header image and a few other things I suppose and if possible host all the images used in this template on your own server.

Update 2-

Another version of Typominima for Blogger, this time adapted to a magazine or news site look-

Update 3 -

if you prefer the single column template but would like to add the missing time stamp, author stamp, labels, post comment link etc then try this-

1 COLUMN TYPOMINIMA FOR BLOGGER WITH TIME STAMP, AUTHOR STAMP, LABELS, POST COMMENT LINK ETC

If you have already customized your Typominima template and would just like to add the missing elements then download the instructions in this text file-
                http://www.mediafire.com/?b4ka5a7epkqfcn1

My apologies for the spelling mistakes in the text file. Spell checker was off. How much one has come to depend on such things.

Inspired by Misstaki in the comments and hat tip to Kristen.

Update 4-

Update 3 is now redundant. All problems and solutions related to the Typominima template are now neatly posted here.

Patience.. patience .. not long now

These words are as much for me as for anyone else... but, hey, the wait might be worth it. Liberty News Central will be back very soon with plenty of changes under and over the hood.

A new look and a much cleaner code.
Like a shampoo and a bath for a weary traveler.

'Tis the season of renewal, after all.

My apologies for the unexpected hiatus in blogging. The weight of 'real' life sometimes overwhelms all things 'virtual'.

Commenting may be down

The commenting system on this blog is expecting a blackout for a day or two or three.I was satisfied with the commenting services provided by Haloscan - simple, practical and free. However they are now moving to a feature-rich and much more complex platform called "Echo". That is OK with me. What is not OK is that I'm supposed to handover some hard earned money to shift to the new system.

Not in your dreams, buddy!

So this blog shall be moving to a new system -pretty soon I hope.In the meantime your lovingly typed comments may disappear for a while -but don't worry, they are safe. They will come back when the new commenting-thingy is tested and working.

If you wish to leave a comment and are unable to - I apologize in advance.Just email your comment to me and it will get posted when the sun is shining again in a couple of days hopefully.
Thanks.

The world changed while I was away

I apologize for a much longer than expected break. The real world intrudes on the virtual and overwhelms it.I hate you reality!

And my, how the world changed while I was not minding this blog:

Back from oblivion

I apologize for the longer than expected hiatus. The pressures of the real world outweighed the pleasures of the virtual ones. Reality -I hate you!

However, now that I am back, I hope to be more regular than previously. That's the audacity of hope.

Normal programming to resume shortly

But what the heck!

Bad luck, I am still alive!

The trouble with blogging is that reality intrudes. One has to go off and do something to make a living. Gotta eat, you know. God made us like that. Maybe that is why I don't believe in Him!

But, hey, it took me a while but I'm baaaack! Thanks to the couple of people who emailed to ask me if I was well.Bad luck guys, I am still alive.

This is one among other things I have been doing -sketching nudes:

Lucky me!

I was on NDTV, la la la la!

NDTV reporter Amulya Gopalakrishnan was nice enough to interview me for a program on Islam, terrorism etc. It was broadcast on the 12th.I got about 18 seconds of screen time and came out looking like a smug and stuffed parrot! A screen shot of my blog also appeared, this being the post highlighted-

The story is also available on the NDTV website.

However, whoever saw that segment without being familiar with this blog might come away with a misleading impression. The narration as my blog was being shown(along with images of other sites) went like this-

"On one hand people vent their most bigoted feelings on blogs and social networks under varying degrees of anonymity ---"

Along with that large 'Venom on the web' highlighted at the bottom part of the screen, one might have got the impression that I am among those spouting 'venom', one of those 'hate-filled' bloggers venting hate and fire from behind anonymity.

Far from it. I am neither anonymous nor venting any 'hate'. I prefer cool-headed logical analysis sprinkled with tongue-in-cheek humor. That analysis might be offensive to some, it might not be politically-correct, it might go against the grain of 'consensus' -but, as sure as hell, it will be rational and logical to the extent of my abilities.

The full sentence in that narration was-

"On one hand people vent their most bigoted feelings on blogs and social networks under varying degrees of anonymity, on the other hand for anyone wiling to go deeper these internet forums offer a profusion of perspectives."
(emphasis mine)

I only wish that my site had had been shown while that second part of the sentence was being read out since it fits this blog to a T. But, what the heck!

Update -Atlantean was the other blogger interviewed. He has the video. In fact, having just discovered Atlantean's blog, I must say it is well worth a look.
